Scholar Athlete of the Week, Football 2013-14 Season

The Jonathan & Judy Hoff Scholar Athlete of the Week program was created to recognize the academic steps that our football student athletes are making. The following students have been recognized for an academic skill that they have developed through practice, a study habit that they have formed into an effective routine, a positive measured outcome that they have achieved through a course assignment or exam, and/or a leadership trait that they have portrayed through academics.

Week of December 9th, 2013

k_boehmKyle Boehm

Recognized for taking a proactive approach toward written assignments in a timely prepared manner. Kyle does a great job independently organizing what needs to be accomplished at different stages of writing. He always comes prepared to a drop-in session with notes and ideas to construct an outline, which leads to an effective rough draft, and a polished final piece.

r_davisonRay Davison

Recognized for demonstrating a high level of focus and preparation when it comes to maintaining academic discipline. Ray is known for getting in the zone ahead of schedule and often finds himself successfully completing tasks without the added pressure of procrastination by working efficiently on his own and seeking academic support resources when necessary.

Recognized for his dedication to developing effective academic discipline through organizational skills, note taking etiquette, and test preparation resources. Darius has embraced the little things that make a difference when it comes to academic outcomes, holding himself responsible to achieve at a higher level with the assistance of the academic support staff.

Recognized for taking initiative to seek out help from academic support staff in order to develop his good ideas into effective outcomes. Noah uses his time efficiently during team study and takes advantage of the academic coaches’ knowledge and skills to enhance his own educational performance by brainstorming ideas and asking for feedback in a timely manner.

Recognized for showing great determination and responsibility through academics. His work ethic and study habits have translated into improved performance in class as exemplified by an A+ performance on a recent midterm exam. Aaron has demonstrated that he is highly engaged in the academic process and fully committed to his intellectual growth.

Recognized for his motivation in maintaining a positive academic and athletic environment within the team locker room. Antione not only handles his own business on the field and in the classroom, but he takes the time to encourage his teammates to stay focused. He is a great advocate for his peers, yet by the same token, he does not allow them to make excuses.

Recognized for his superb dedication to the notion of team development and success of individuals in building worthy habits and positive attitudes on the field, in the classroom, and throughout the community. Vince seeks to consistently grow in the bigger game of life by engaging in conversations with people from various backgrounds both on and off campus.

Recognized for his maturity and poise with regard to “taking care of business” both academically and athletically. Ikem approaches his daily tasks with an end goal in mind, not looking for short cuts or making excuses in the process. His discipline and devotion has made him successful as an Interdisciplinary Studies major at Berkeley.

Recognized for exemplary leadership through his inspiring work ethic on the field and superb performance in the classroom. Chris has not only maintained one of the highest GPA’s on the team, but in the 3 ½ years of coursework at Berkeley, he has not received a grade lower than a B while double majoring in Business and Interdisciplinary Studies.

Recognized for proactively approaching his academic courses with a positive attitude regardless of the difficulty of the content. Jalen always sets the bar high for himself and strives to produce quality work, and for that reason he has recently experienced top marks, more consistently, on his assignments and exams in pursuit of entering the Legal Studies program.

Recognized for consistently demonstrating quality work within high caliber courses while pursuing a professional career path in the biological and chemical sciences. Cole has displayed maturity and poise from the moment he stepped onto this campus and it clearly impacts how successful he is and will continue to be both in the classroom and on the field.

Not only does he constantly push for his own mastery of a subject, but he also takes great pride in helping his peers achieve the same.

Avery’s hard work and academic success is reflected in the high marks he has received this semester. Recognized for his outstanding work ethic in balancing his dedication to the football program, while maintaining one of the highest GPA’s on the team. Mitchel has demonstrated high performance in every sense of the word by putting in 110% athletically while simultaneously receiving exceptional marks as an Environmental Engineering Science major.

Recognized for proactively staying on top of his academic responsibilities and taking initiative to seek out all the resources available on campus to help him succeed at an optimal level. Hardy epitomizes the notion of independent learner as he has clearly built and managed an academic identity for himself at Cal, while thriving athletically on the field.

Recognized for exceptional performance and effort put forth through both an individual and peer format. Jack has been complimented by his tutor for phrasing points argumentatively and using critical language and textual support to prove his claims in his writing. He has also been praised for being supportive of his peers during academic sessions.

Recognized for consistently staying ahead of schedule with his academic commitments by taking ownership of arranging tutorial support that keeps him on top of assignments and papers. Brad has been complimented by his tutors for being very knowledgeable about the material he has learned in class and hence, being engaged in each session.

Although Cormac is in his first semester at Berkeley, he carries himself like an upperclassmen and can often be found working diligently in the SAHPC Academic Suite or Team Study Hall.

Recognized for consistent attention to his academics with a positive attitude. Daniel clearly strives to be an independent learner by asking questions that increase his ability to adapt to assignments and interpret texts and prompts skillfully. He demonstrates effective work habits on a daily basis both on and off the field.

His writing shows a mastery of academic discourse including the use of argument, evidence, emotion, and creativity.

Recognized for leading his team as a captain on the field, while being one of the hardest working scholar athletes off the field. From the moment he stepped on this campus Freddie has consistently dedicated time to his academics taking initiative to schedule tutoring sessions in order achieve success at a high level.

Recognized for serving as a role model for his fellow peers through individual study sessions and group led facilitations. James uses the rigor within his courses as a form of inspiration, approaching his academics with the same mentality that he uses to train within the sporting space.

Recognized for demonstrating a positively contagious attitude, both on and off the field. Sione consistently challenges himself to perform at an optimum level in every task that he faces. As a result, he has seen a big jump in his GPA between the two semesters he has been here at Cal.
