Study Groups
Central to the tutorial program are the study groups. These groups are
formed based on need/demand from core lower division courses. All students
should begin their search for tutorial support with these study groups. If
a student is seeking support for a course for which we provide a group, then
they are required to participate in these groups for a minimum of 2-3 weeks
before requesting an individual tutor. Individual tutoring is not readily
available for those courses that the ASC
provides study groups.
Study Groups offered are listed on our
web site, as
well as the tutorial bulletin board and advisor's office doors in the
ASC.
Note the days, times and location. If you are in a
class for which we have a study group, your name will automatically be added to
the list. If you are mandated, you will be required to attend this study
group.
Individual Tutoring
The ASC
provides one-on-one tutoring for college writing, introductory composition and
foreign languages. We recommend that these students, particularly those
enrolled in college writing, request a one-on-one tutor. Students can
Request a Tutor
from the ASC website.
Please be sure to leave updated contact information, especially
the email account and phone number that you use and check regularly. Once
you receive your tutor information from us via email, do not wait for the tutor
to contact you. It is your responsibility to contact your tutor.
Failure to do so in a timely manner may result in your loss of this
privilege. Furthermore, tutors cannot be reserved on a "layaway" plan.
If you request a tutor, it is assumed that you will begin to meet promptly
and regularly. Repeated absenteeism with your tutor may result in your
loss of these privileges. The ASC
also offers individual tutoring in a limited capacity for other core lower
division courses as well as a very limited number of upper division courses.
We will do our best to provide students with the support they request, but
in the event that we cannot, we recommend regularly attending professor office
hours as well as GSI office hours. Research indicates that those students
who do well in their course work are usually those students who regularly
attend professor office hours.
Drop-in Tutoring
Drop-in tutoring is offered for math/stat/econ/writing, Mon-Thu 7-9pm.
Please check the bulletin boards in the
ASC
for further information on specific tutors. It is recommended that
students choose drop-in services if they are not interested in meeting with a
tutor throughout the semester.
Quiet study
Quiet study is provided for students who are required/mandated to complete a
given number of hours in the ASC's
tutorial program, but who are unable to participate in other services from
our program. Quiet study is seen as a last resort for students. Those
who opt out of other academic support in lieu of quiet study will be
discouraged from doing so. All other components of the
ASC's tutorial program take
precedence over quiet study. During quiet study
students are required to do two things: be quiet and study. Students who
do not comply will be asked to leave, and their hours of attendance will not be
recorded for that day.
Workshops
In addition to quiet study the ASC
also plans to offer a number of workshops on computer applications such as
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Other topics will be covered, including career development.
Students will be able to attend these workshops instead of quiet study and
receive their mandated hours of attendance.
Computer lab
Macintosh computers are available for student and tutor use in our lab
facility. Assistance in Word, Excel and Powerpoint are offered.
Special Programs, Services and Courses
Summer Bridge Adjunct Program
The ASC
offers a six-week summer bridge adjunct program (see also
UGA Bridge)
for student athletes to ease the transition
from high school to college. This special program provides support through
tutoring, group workshops, individual academic advising, personal counseling
and computer training. To encourage an enjoyable and educational
experience, we require student athletes to participate in all aspects of the
program. With its comprehensive approach to learning, summer bridge gives
participants a head-start for the fall term.
Students With Learning Disabilities
The ASC works closely with the
DSP
to provide assistance for students with diagnosed
learning disabilities. The DSP
offers a wide range
of services, accommodations, and auxiliary services for students with
disabilities. These services are individually designed and based on the
specific needs of each student as identified by DSP's counselors.
Education 98 - "Studying: Language And Society"
This course explores the relationship between language use and social settings,
while also addressing various modes of communication as they relate to academic
discourse. Education 98 teaches strategies that are proven effective for
successful and efficient reading, learning and studying. These strategies
include previewing, annotating, outlining, flash cards, summarizing, exam
taking and essay writing. The course utilizes texts that represent various
genres of academic writing that include textbook chapters, journal articles and
other research and reference materials from diverse academic disciplines.
A number of students in the class will meet individually with
learning specialists from the graduate school of education twice weekly in
order to further explore the topics and strategies presented in class as they
relate to the students' other coursework.
