Job Description

General Overview

The Athletic Study Center reports to the Division of Undergraduate Education which promotes progress, inspire collaboration, and synergy, and maximizes efficacy for all members of the campus community, and is essential to making Berkeley the world class university that it is.

This part-time position offers onsite and remote work experience for those interested in working in service related professions that include, banking, law, medicine, social services, and teaching to name a few, and for those who want to learn more about pedagogic theory and its application.

Position Overview

The UG Tutor position works with a diverse population of student athlete skill sets, from the highly academically competent to the academically marginalized.

Our goal in providing academic support is to foster a sense of belonging, community engagement and collaboration, and self-empowerment.

We apply socio-cultural models of learning such as Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development, or, Cognitive Apprenticeship to the learning and development of academic discourses and skills.

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Academic Support.  Daily support and oversight will be provided by the paired Learning Specialist as well as the Graduate Tutor Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site and remote small group and one-on-one academic support to student athletes.
  • Complete written session reports following each session in a timely manner, within 24 hours.
  • Attend weekly group training seminars held by the Director of Academic Support and Graduate Tutor Coordinator.

Required Qualifications

  • Desire to learn more about teaching and learning.
  • A GPA of 3.0+ in the discipline where you will tutor.
  • At least a second semester Freshman.
  • Be extremely punctual, organized, and detailed-oriented 
  • Work well on a team to effectively and consistently communicate with students and staff.
  • Be aware of and respectful of boundaries in professional working relationships.
  • Must be available to work on-site and/or remotely 3-10 hours per week.
  • Must be available to attend weekly training seminars.
  • Available in the evenings sometime from Sunday through Thursday 6-9PM.
  • Have access to a desktop or laptop computer or tablet.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations and student personalities.
  • Experience working with Google formats (drive, docs, calendar).
  • Experience with video conferencing and learning (e.g use of Zoom, Google Hangout, etc.).
  • Previous work experience as a tutor, mentor, teacher, or coach.
  • A genuine interest in the application of pedagogic theory.

Hours and Position Duration

  • Part time:  3 - 10 hours per week.
  • Position renewed on a semester-by-semester basis.
  • Appointments may be extended for additional terms based on performance evaluation and available positions.

Compensation

  • Hourly pay:  $16-19/hr  (note that pay rates are set by the union).
