Job Description

General Overview

The Athletic Study Center reports to the Division of Undergraduate Education which promotes progress, inspire collaboration, and synergy, and maximizes efficacy for all members of the campus community, and is essential to making Berkeley the world class university that it is.

This part-time position offers onsite and remote work experience for those interested in working in student services in higher education, and/or working in student services for student athletes, particularly for those interested in the roles of learning specialists and tutorial/academic coordinators.

Position Overview

The Graduate Tutor position works with academically vulnerable student athletes alongside a paired Learning Specialist.   These students are typically incoming or second year students who have struggled academically in high school or during their academic career at Cal.  Our goal in providing academic support is to foster independence and self-empowerment.

Graduate tutors provide support as determined by the student’s Individual Learning Plan (ILP).  ILP’s are support plans created for each student by their Advisor and Learning Specialist.  Graduate tutors will work on a team with a Learning Specialist and Advisor, primarily interfacing with the paired Learning Specialist.  Graduate Tutors will both model and teach academic skills such as time-management, organization, study skills, and reading and writing strategies.

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Academic Support.  Daily support and oversight will be provided by the paired Learning Specialist as well as the Graduate Tutor Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site and remote small group and one-on-one academic support to student athletes.
  • Complete written session reports following each session in a timely manner (within 24 hours).
  • Attend weekly check-in meetings with Learning Specialists and maintain additional communication as needed.
  • Attend weekly group training seminars held by the Director of Academic Support and Graduate Tutor Coordinator.

Required Qualifications

  • Have experience teaching in a classroom setting or one-on-one tutorial support.
  • Be extremely punctual, organized, and detail-oriented.
  • Work well on a team to effectively and consistently communicate with students and staff.
  • Be aware of and respectful of boundaries in professional working relationships.
  • Must be available to work on-site and remotely, 12-13 hours per week.
  • Must be available to attend weekly training seminars.
  • Must be available to meet Learning Specialists on-site weekly.
  • Current enrollment in Graduate Program at the University of California, Berkeley. Preference will be given to those enrolled in the Graduate School of Education, Social Work , and Public Health.
  • Available in the evenings.
  • Have access to a laptop, desktop computer or tablet.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in working in higher education or academic support in athletics.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations and student personalities.
  • Experience in classroom management.
  • Experience working with google formats (drive, docs, calendar).
  • Previous work experience as a tutor, mentor, teacher, or coach.
  • A genuine interest in supporting underrepresented populations to succeed both academically and personally.

Hours and Position Duration

  • Part time:  12-15 hrs per week.
  • 170 hour requirement if on fee remission.
  • Position renewed on a semester-by-semester basis.
  • Appointments may be extended for additional terms based on performance evaluation and available positions.

Compensation

  • Hourly pay:  $18-20 per hour  (pay rates are set by the union).
  • Partial Fee Remission for:  Student Service Fee;  Tuition (In-State; does not cover out-of-state fees);  Health Insurance Fee.
